Regular and proper maintenance strongly influences the durability and long- term appearance of a rug. If you've just recently purchased an area rug or you're wondering how to keep it looking brand new as long as possible here are four suggestions that we recommend:
Vacuuming:
Vacuum the rug regularly. Once a week is recommended, even more often the first month of owning the rug. This allows for the cut fibers to extend and breath.
Vacuum in the direction of the pile ( as an example, imagine the way you stroke a cat's fur.)
Remove or turn off the rotating beater bar for heavy textured rugs or wool pieces. Otherwise the vacuum will pull looser yarns.
Rug Pads:
Rug pads are highly recommended. Rug pads prevent siding on the floor, helping with appearance but also longevity and premature aging. They absorb some of the pressure of the natural weight of walking on the rug which help prolong the life of the rug.
Cleaning:
Spilling and staining are always a fear when you have a nice rug. Just remember time is of the essence! Clean stains immediately and dry with an absorbent cloth.
Always work inward on the stain to prevent spreading and not to rub.
Spot cleaning helps extend the life of the rug. Every couple of years, or if in doubt, consult a professional rug cleaner.
Rotate Your Rug:
Rotating your area rug (180 degrees) every year or every other year (we always say around the holiday season or spring cleaning when you can have it be a routine) is a good way will help prevent uneven wear and deterioration due to sunlight and foot traffic. This helps in allowing the fibers to rest from time to time.
